Bender UK Equip New Royal Lancaster Modular Theatre

Royal Lancaster Modular Theatre

Royal Lancaster Modular Theatre

A new £2.5 million modular state-of-the-art operating theatre and recovery area at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary is equipped with safe, resilient critical care power from Bender UK.  We also supplied theatre equipment including operating lights, pendants, theatre touchscreen control panel and PACS technology.

The new theatre has been built to provide capacity to enable four existing operating theatres at the RLI to be refurbished and upgraded without disrupting clinical activity. The project was managed by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust Capital Services Team.

Our client - ModuleCo delivers fast-track, design and build, fully fitted healthcare buildings, produced using state of the art modular construction techniques.  ModuleCo manufactured the complete theatre unit offsite     with the building was delivered in sections and craned into place on a prepared site.

Once the refurbishment is complete the modular theatre – which has a lifespan of 20 years, will continue to be used to provide additional flexibility for patient care.  The completion of the new theatre means that there are now seven operating theatres in Lancaster - five main theatres and two theatres in the Women’s Unit.

The new operating theatre is sited between the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) and existing operating theatres.  The new facility went live November 2020 and features the latest design and technology to enhance care for patients and create a vastly improved working environment for staff.

To provide critical care power for Group 2 areas Bender UK supplied medical IT Power  for the new modular unit, together with a battery‑back‑up uninterruptible power system for added resilience.

The theatre has award-winning Q-Flow™ LED operating lights from Merivaara incorporating a wireless HD camera. The circular design of the lights enables an optimum flow of clean air to reach the site of the operation from the overhead ultra-clean air canopy, reducing the potential for patient infections.  The lights deliver best-in-class colour rendering so vital for surgeons and theatre staff to monitor the health and well-being of patients during operations.

Other Bender UK equipment used to furnish the new theatre includes ceiling-mounted service pendantssupplying medical gases, power and data alongside the operating table, a touch-screen control panel that offers ergonomic control of servicing and lighting within the theatre and links via Bluetooth to ceiling-mounted speakers.

We also supplied a PACS screen that links to the HD camera in the Merivaara light and can be used for viewing medical files and X-rays.  The state-of-the-art screen offers ultra-HD imaging and uses safety glass coated with an anti-reflective and anti-fingerprint finish.  Advanced design incorporating cooling technology means no fan is required, avoiding the danger of contaminated air turbulence, and the screen is water and dust proof to IP65 for increased hygiene and easy cleaning.

Mark Hampton, Capital Services Manager for UHMBT, said: “Our Trust has invested £2.5 million to ensure that all our theatres meet stringent modern standards.

“This new modular theatre was particularly challenging given its location between the Centenary Building and the Ambulatory Care Unit and the Coronary Care Unit. A special thanks to the contractors and especially to all our clinical and non-clinical departments which have allowed Capital Services to complete this vital addition. This new theatre will allow the Trust to carry out a planned refurbishment of the existing four operating theatres in the Centenary Building without disrupting clinical activity.”

Kate Maynard, Chief Operating Officer for UHMBT, said: “The new theatre will enable us to retain our operating capacity while important upgrading work is taking place. We can now offer a significantly enhanced experience to patients who come to us for surgical care.

“We now have an operating theatre that has the most advanced technology and design to ensure the highest levels of safety, care, experience and performance.”

We have provided equipment for upgrades of theatres at other hospitals operated by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, including Furness General Hospital in Barrow and Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal.  We also support the Trust with a service and maintenance package for equipment and Group 2 critical power systems.
