AC charging – safe, efficient and future-proof with Bender

Discover smart solutions for your AC charging station – whether for private, commercial or (semi-)public applications. With Bender Charging Electronics, you can charge reliably, flexibly and cost-effectively.

AC charging – the cost-effective solution for 90 % of applications

AC charging is the most cost-effective and widely used solution for electric vehicles. It is ideal for locations where vehicles are parked for extended periods – for example, at home, at work or in (semi-)public car parks. By utilising the existing electricity grid, AC charging is cost-effective and flexibly scalable.

Overview of four typical charging scenarios

The requirements for charging infrastructure vary depending on the location:

1. Private charging (home charging)

  • Objective: Convenient charging at home.
  • Requirements: Simple installation, charging using surplus solar power, integration into home energy management systems (HEMS) and the grid in accordance with Section 14a of the German Energy Act (EnWG).

2. Commercial charging

  • Objective: Efficient charging infrastructure for businesses and properties.
  • Requirements: Company and staff car parks, integration into energy and load management, easy scalability.

3. Semi-public charging

  • Objective: Flexible solutions for multi-storey car parks, hotels and shopping centres.
  • Requirements: Operator models with remote maintenance, reliable billing systems, high operational flexibility.

4. Public charging

  • Objective: Robust charging for everyone in public spaces.
  • Requirements: Durable technology, compatibility with all common billing systems (back-ends).

Whether the requirements are simple or complex, Bender supports manufacturers and operators with flexible, safe and future-proof solutions for every challenge.

What a modern AC charging station must be able to do

A modern AC charging station performs key functions and is usually integrated into a corresponding ‘ecosystem’. Whilst the interfaces vary depending on the scenario, there are still basic functions that always apply.

Communication and Interfaces

  • (HEMS & GRID) Energy management: Dynamic load management, integration into higher-level energy management systems and grid-friendly control.
  • (EV) Vehicle: Communication and control of the charging process in accordance with IEC 61851 and ISO 15118.
  • (USER) User interaction: Authentication, status display and ease of use.
  • (CPO) Back-end integration: Data transmission for monitoring, control and billing.

Electrical safety and standards

Regardless of the scenario, electrical safety and compliance with regulatory requirements are indispensable. This includes protection against fault currents and the reporting of faults – these basic functions are essential for all charging stations.

Charging Electronics platform

Our platform offers a modular hardware and software solution for the straightforward development of AC charging stations.

It can be flexibly adapted to different applications and markets thanks to mutually compatible devices and firmware updates.

Mechanical standardisation reduces costs and enables the integration of other functions as a central, scalable solution.

The modular software solution ensures that any new functions required can be added at a later date

Your benefits at a glance

Depending on the configuration you choose, Bender hardware is better suited to smaller wall boxes, single charging points or larger dual charging points.

Reference solution for commercial and semi-public charging

Our components for your AC charging solution

The main components of our platform solution: HMI145, ICC1314 and IPM1401 – the foundation for your AC charging solution:

  • Integrated load management for up to 250 charging points – across all devices and compatible with existing energy management systems.
  • Intuitive operation via HMI or automatic identification and authorisation in accordance with ISO 15118
  • Flexible backend connectivity via Ethernet, LTE/4G and an integrated gateway function for easy expansion

This combination meets all requirements for commercial and semi-public charging points and is already being used successfully in numerous projects.

Modularity and flexibility

The Power Module is interchangeable, and the charge controller is available with various interface options. For other charging scenarios, alternative HMIs or energy meters can be used, or omitted entirely – the modular design of the Charging Electronics platform offers maximum flexibility for this purpose.
