Maximum safety for medical IT systems

Bender's new monitoring technology for reliable operation

In Group 2 medical locations - such as operating theatres and intensive care units - a power failure during patient treatment can have life-threatening consequences. This is why the international standard IEC 60364-7-710 requires an unearthed medical IT system with continuous insulation monitoring. This power supply remains available even in the event of the first insulation fault.

With the ISOMETER® isoMED527 and the ISOSCAN® EDS551, Bender offers the new generation of insulation monitoring and insulation fault detection for medical IT systems. The devices monitor all safety-relevant parameters such as system leakage capacitance (see FAQ why this is important), provide early warning in the event of critical conditions and automatically locate insulation faults in less than 5 seconds.

Advantages at a glance

Enhanced electrical safety

Monitoring of all relevant parameters for medical IT systems

Faster fault clearance

Automatic insulation fault localisation in less than 5 seconds

Prioritised alarms

Every alarm is reported immediately. No alarm message is lost.

Seamless integration into the Bender system

New BSC communication interface (see FAQ for details)

Key application areas

Bender's insulation monitoring and fault location devices are designed to ensure a reliable power supply for medical IT systems in group 2 locations, including

  • Operating theatres
  • Anaesthesia units
  • Intensive care units
  • Recovery rooms
  • Cardiac catheterisation suites
  • Angiography suites (MRI)
  • Neonatology
  • Induction rooms
  • A&E departments
  • other Group 2 areas used for medical purposes

Bender solutions for medical IT systems

The ISOMETER® isoMED527 and the ISOSCAN® EDS551 combine continuous insulation monitoring with automatic insulation fault localisation. This allows critical changes to be detected at an early stage and faults to be located quickly, and ensures safe operations.

Remote insulation warning

A Remote Insulation Warning (RIW) is required in accordance with IEC 61557-8. The required alarm indication can be provided using a Bender Control Panel CP9xx-EDGE or a Remote Alarm Indicator CP305 (software version 2.0 or later). This ensures that insulation fault alarms are signaled remotely and are clearly visible to the medical staff, as required by the standard.

FAQ

In Group 2 medical rooms, the power supply must remain available even in the event of an initial insulation fault. To ensure that an insulation fault does not go undetected, continuous monitoring of the insulation resistance is required within an IT system.
Continuous insulation monitoring detects deterioration in insulation at a non-critical stage and warns of potential critical conditions. This ensures the reliable operation of medical rooms.

The system leakage capacitance has a direct impact on the fault current when an insulation fault occurs. Increased system leakage capacitance may be caused by long cable runs, transformer windings, connected medical electrical equipment, or ageing, damaged or faulty switching power supplies connected to the medical IT system.

As ISOMETER® isoMED527 and ISOSCAN® EDS551 also monitor this important system parameter and issue an early warning if the system leakage capacitance becomes too high, corrective measures can be implemented before a critical operating condition develops. This helps to reduce fault currents in the event of a first insulation fault, improve electrical safety and ensure the reliable operation of medical IT systems.

The insulation fault location system automatically identifies the circuit in which an insulation fault has occurred. While insulation monitoring detects a deterioration of the insulation restistance, an insulation fault location system helps determine where the fault is located.

The ISOSCAN® EDS551 performs this task automatically and locate insulation faults in less than 5 seconds.

The BSC protocol is a new bus protocol for a more powerful communication between Bender devices. It enables the devices within the monitoring system to exchange information and alarm messages. The new protocol enables faster alarm triggering in the event of an insulation fault, regardless of how many monitoring devices are integrated into the system.

Important to know: The BSC protocol is not compatible with the previously used BMS protocol.

Bender Control Panel CP9xx-EDGE, the Remote Alarm Indicator CP305 (from software version 2.0 onwards) and the Condition Monitor EDGE500IP are available for Remote Insulation Warning via BSC protocol.

The requirements for medical IT systems are defined by IEC 60364-7-710. The requirements for insulation monitoring devices and insulation fault location are specified in IEC 61557-8 and IEC 61557-9.
In addition, national standards and regulations must be observed when a medical IT system is being planned or operated.
