The refurbished theatre benefits from new medical IT power systems and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to provide ultra-safe and resilient power for the Group 2 critical care area, which were also provided by Bender UK. The power provision includes Bender’s unique ATICS changeover solution purpose designed for medical applications with patient safety at the very core of its development.

The ATICS design incorporates permanent self-testing across all critical components and is the only medical auto-changeover device independently certified as fully compliant with Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 2 parts 1-3.

The operating lights are part of the award-winning Q-Flow™ range from Merivaara that Bender UK exclusively distribute in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The lights deliver best-in-class colour rendering that is vital for surgeons and theatre staff to monitor the health and well-being of patients during operations, and a hugely efficient column of daylight-quality light to illuminate deep cavities.

Theatre 2 at Westmorland General is for orthopaedic surgery and the refurbishment included a clean air canopy. The circular design of the Q-Flow™ lights optimises laminar air flow to take contaminated air away from the operating site, reducing the potential for patient infections.

Bender UK’s theatre control panels are manufactured in-house to exact customer specifications, with every panel programmed and configured to the client’s specific needs. Control of the theatre environment is combined into a single ergonomic fingertip-operated interface panel for lighting, temperature and humidity, ventilation and critical alarms. Each panel incorporates a unique antimicrobial finish that minimises the risk of contamination and the spread of harmful bacteria and aids hospitals in infection prevention and control. The unit in Theatre 2 is integrated with a 42-inch PACS 4K screen for viewing scans and x-rays, and the system also includes Bluetooth-enabled speakers. Sam Parry, Clinical Sales Manager - North at Bender UK explained that the company has previously worked with the Trust on the refurbishment of operating theatres at Furness General Hospital and with equipping new theatres within the South Lakes Birth Centre. He said: “The Trust was particularly impressed with the touch screen control panels and is seeking to standardise the equipment across the theatres. They also had experience with the Merivaara Q-Flow™ LED operating lights that have proved a popular choice since their introduction into the UK with more than 100 sets already installed.” Bender UK is also contracted to provide maintenance and service support to the Trust for clinical equipment and critical care power, offering round the clock maintenance, verification, repair and rapid response call-out services. Refurbishment of Theatre 2 was carried out as part of a £19 million programme to transform and improve the environment and facilities for patients using the Trust. Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal is one of three hospitals within the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust; the others are Furness General Hospital in Barrow, and the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.
